Engagement ring styles
Side stone engagement rings
Made popular in the Art Deco period and never really out of it since: a centre stone with company. From traditional three-stone designs to contemporary diamond shoulders, side stones add light, width and meaning, when they’re balanced properly.
The side stone family
Three-stone (trilogy)
A centre diamond flanked by two stones, often read as past, present and future. The classic side-stone form, and endlessly personal in its proportions.
Diamond shoulders
Smaller diamonds running down the band toward the centre stone, adding light without competing for attention.
Pavé and channel bands
A continuous line of stones, claw-set for sparkle or channel-set for a cleaner, harder-wearing edge.
Coloured side stones
Sapphires, rubies or her birthstone beside a diamond centre. Colour where it means something.
Balance is the craft
Side stones done badly crowd the centre; done well, they frame it. Proportion is everything: the taper of the stones, the height of the settings, how the light moves across the whole top of the ring. This is exactly the kind of judgement a CAD drawing and a wax model let you check before anything is made.
Side stone questions
Do side stones make the centre diamond look bigger?
Visually, yes. Tapered side stones and diamond shoulders lead the eye toward the centre and make it read larger. It’s one of the honest ways to get more presence from the same budget.
What do the three stones in a trilogy ring mean?
Traditionally your past, present and future together. Some clients choose it for that; others just love the balance. The meaning is yours to give it.
Should the side stones match the centre diamond?
They should agree with it: similar colour grade and cut quality so nothing looks yellow or dull beside the centre. We match side stones to your centre stone by eye, under the same light.
Do side stone rings need more maintenance?
A little. More stones means more claws to check, so an occasional setting check matters. Ours is quick, done under the microscope, and part of how we look after every piece we make.
