Diamond cut

The cut of a diamond refers to how well it reflects light, and it influences a diamond’s beauty more than any other characteristic. It’s the most important of the 4Cs, and the one we refuse to compromise on.

What cut actually means

Cut isn’t the shape of the diamond, it’s the precision of its proportions, symmetry and polish. When facets are angled correctly, light entering the stone bounces internally and returns through the top as brilliance (white light) and fire (flashes of colour). When proportions are off, light leaks out the bottom and sides, and the stone goes flat.

Reading cut grades honestly

Grading laboratories rate cut from Excellent down to Poor. Between Excellent and Very Good, the difference can be subtle; below that, it’s visible to anyone. But grades compress a lot of nuance: two Excellent-cut stones can still perform differently, which is why we assess how a stone actually handles light before recommending it.

Why we protect cut first

A whiter colour grade or cleaner clarity grade can’t rescue a dull stone, but a superbly cut diamond flatters everything around it, and can even make a stone look larger than its carat weight suggests. If you remember one thing: never trade cut for size.
