How to choose a diamond

You want to be sure the diamond you select is right for you, without needing a gemology degree to get there. Here’s the honest version of how we’d choose, and how we guide clients through it every week.

Start with cut, not carat

Cut is the one C that creates sparkle. A well-cut diamond throws light back at you; a poorly cut one leaks it out the sides and looks dull no matter how large or white it is. If the budget forces a trade-off, protect the cut first, always.

Buy for the eye, not the certificate

Two diamonds with identical certificates can look noticeably different in real light. Certificates describe a stone; they don’t show you its character. This is why we put real stones side by side in front of you: the right diamond is the one your eye keeps returning to.

It’s also why colour and clarity are places you can often save: the difference between grades that matter on paper is frequently invisible on the hand.

Think about the hand it will live on

A diamond isn’t chosen in a vacuum. Finger shape, the metal colour, the setting style and how the piece will be worn every day all change what looks right. A slightly smaller, better-cut stone in the right setting almost always beats a bigger stone chosen from a spreadsheet.

Ask someone who isn’t paid on the upsell

Our advice is simple: we tell you what’s worth paying for and what isn’t, including when the honest answer is to spend less. Bring your budget and your questions, and we’ll show you exactly what it buys, natural or lab-grown, side by side.

Rather just ask someone?
